Chapter Chapter 5 in Whole Earth, 2022, pp 91-107 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The structure of the modern nation-state is apparently divided into separate spheres. There is consideration on the nature of these divisions, and whether the modern state operates as a whole entity, or “totality,” as well as the nature of the unifying forces, if any. This chapter reviews approaches to this question in diverse literature and discusses the potential for disruption and contradiction. The concern in this chapter is the use of this distinction, the public/private divide, to resolve the contradictions which result from the view of “capital” as an impersonal automatic agent, which is typical of capitalism (as discussed in Chap. 4 above). On the other hand, the public/private divide is subject to its own contradictions.
