Chapter 39 in Handbook of Cognitive Mathematics, 2022, pp 1243-1279 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter is a survey of Charles S. Peirce’s philosophy of pragmaticism as applied to the analysis of the meanings of mathematical practice from foundational and cognitive points of view. Pragmaticism is a pluralist methodology addressing questions and topics such as (i) mathematical objects as hypothetical mental creations; (ii) the roots of mathematical theories in the experience of mathematical reasoners; (iii) the place of structuralist and other relational approaches in theories of mathematical practices, and (iv) pragmaticism itself as a distinct philosophy of (cognitive) mathematics.
