Abstract:
Abstract The term ‘democratic leader’ is perhaps an oxymoron, and maybe no less so than the slogan some of these elected ‘leaders’ often criticise: ‘democratic centralism.’ Basically, politics is often flooded with critics criticising their critics. But the aggressive comments with which many politicians attack their opponents have a profound impact on society, especially on the young. Those in power perform in this way, partly because of the adversarial structure of politics. The need, therefore, for a democratic polity which is non-adversarial—in a word, for voting procedures which are inherently ‘peaceful’—cannot be over-emphasised. The benefits could be huge.
