Chapter Chapter 8 in Mining Law and Economic Policy, 2022, pp 137-150 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The Africa Mining Vision (AMV) calls for transparent, equitable, and optimal exploitation of mineral resources to underpin broad-based sustainable growth and socio-economic development. It places people at the centre of minerals extraction. This chapter discusses trends and the regional approach adopted by some countries towards the implementation of the AMV. The challenges and critical constraints which have become common amongst African countries on matters related to community rights are discussed. It concludes by highlighting that, despite the many challenges associated with the proper and effective implementation of the AMV, governments and other associated stakeholders can select from a set of policy options appropriate to their unique context from the vision. This is with regard to corporate social responsibility and local content requirements that can be used to enhance miners’ social licence to operate and broad-based socio-economic development. Finally, a set of actions to actualize the vision at the regional level are proposed for the continent.
