Chapter 4 in In Good Conscience, 2022, pp 51-69 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract A business with a conscience needs a corporate purpose to give it direction and a set of corporate principles that guide action. When a business has a solid conscience that drives it forward, it provides employees with a means to critically assess the right thing to do and to take better decisions. Additionally, such decisions can be taken with greater agility. A driving conscience also inspires and motivates employees and stakeholders. However, it is important to remember that businesses with a conscience cannot be built from a classic, unambiguous, top-down, inside-out perspective. Instead, while nurturing a distinctive heritage, businesses must also weigh the perspectives of many interest groups and work with them to co-create a collective conscience that aligns with the corporate strategy. There are many benefits to a co-creative approach to building a business with a conscience, but a vital one is that it strengthens the legitimacy of the strategy and boosts employees’ commitment to it.
