Chapter Chapter 7 in The Theory of the Jahn-Teller Effect, 2022, pp 167-198 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter we study the Jahn-Teller activity of the threefold degenerate orbital state in cubic and icosahedral symmetry. The triplet case poses a new dynamic problem as compared to the previous orbital doublet and spinor quartet problems. Since the symmetry group of the bosons is SO(5), while the symmetry group of the fermions is only the subgroup, SO(3), it requires an Ansatz which takes the subduction relation between both groups into account. In this chapter this Ansatz is derived, and the resulting dynamic equations are solved in terms of radial polynomials and Gegenbauer functions.
