Chapter 6 in Patent Intermediaries, 2022, pp 131-156 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The business models of the specific type of intermediaries studied in this chapter are located at the intersection of digital platforms and patent intermediation. This chapter is organized as follows. First, it examines the current production and diffusion of patent information. Second, it addresses the impact of digital platforms on the economy. Third, it explores the role that digital platforms play in the market for patents. Digital platforms can add to the market for patents, but they are not fully comparable to other (probably more popular) digital platforms, such as Amazon or Airbnb. We identify two types of digital platforms, transaction platforms and innovation platforms. Transaction platforms can create value by facilitating transactions among actors that would not otherwise obtain information about possible trades. Innovation platforms also provide additional services, whether directly or through third parties, to solve specific ills affecting their customers. The chapter illustrates these points with abundant information on free and paid IP marketplaces and concludes with an in-depth analysis of two recent experiments in the market for patents, the IP (digital) auctions promoted by Ocean Tomo and the secondary market for licensing rights created by Intellectual Property Exchange International (IPXI).
