Chapter Chapter 21 in The Palgrave Handbook of Managing Family Business Groups, 2023, pp 549-586 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract We explore the understudied phenomenon of the transition from family business to business family, examining the underlying changes and triggers of this transition through a paradox lens. Using a multi-case methodology of three ethnic Chinese business families owning sizable family business groups, we found that families-in-business resolved various paradoxical tensions related to organizational identity and portfolio entrepreneurship in the transition. We discuss theoretical and practical implications related to the transition.
