Abstract:
Abstract My wholly owned firms, S. Ugelstad’s Rederi (SUR), founded in 1929 and taken over by me in 1990, as well as S. Ugelstad Invest (SUI), the financial transformation of my ship-owning company when this was sold in 2009, represent the themes of this chapter. To understand that “strategy means choice” became clear to me. For instance, SUR gradually came to specialize in exclusively owning so-called “platform supply ships” for the offshore oil industry. Selling and buying ships, as well as stocks, real estate and many other assets, I came to realize what has to be executed when the market cycles were on the high, respectively on the low. In the end, it was a lot about being consistent, with a strong focus on discipline.
