Chapter Chapter 6 in Scale, 2022, pp 165-206 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This Chapter dissects scale as rank, starting with is foundations in the theory of categories and ending with its applications in the production of maps. Its main characteristics – concerning directedness, abstractness, granularity, and objectivity – are presented, and their implications for scale use are illustrated with examples. The distinction between IF-type and F-type transformations is shown to be helpful for the detection of false scales as rank. The scale’s sensitivity on the adopted interval size is highlighted. The chapter shows how the manipulation of scale bins can lead to skewed representations of reality and points to ways in which such distortions can possibly be identified.
