Chapter Chapter 3 in The Gas Industry in Latin Europe, 2023, pp 53-81 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The implementation of the gas supply led to the emergence of a complex legislative and economic system in Latin Europe. The state monopoly gave way to a system of regulation that brought about a new process of organisation. The competition of the markets, the role and the efficiency of companies and municipalities are some of the characteristics of this unprecedented approach. This chapter presents the evolution of the regulation of this service between the mid-nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century in four countries of Latin Europe: France, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Great Britain is also briefly analysed due to its relevance and influence in other countries. To this end, numerous studies on gas management have been analysed, and the evolutionary process of this public service has been examined from a legislative and organisational point of view.
