Chapter Chapter 12 in Dialogues Between Physics and Mathematics, 2022, pp 285-289 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Professor CN Yang founded the Institute for Advanced Studies at Tsinghua University (IASTU) in 1997. It quickly became the intellectual hub of Tsinghua campus, and attracted many world-renowned scientists as faculties or visiting professors. Professor Shoucheng Zhang, who was Professor CN Yang’s disciple back in Stony Brook, used to visit the institute frequently. He introduced the then emerging field of topological insulator to the Tsinghua physics community, and has mentored several extremely talented young students. Moreover, his theoretical insights played a crucial role in the discovery of quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) by the joint team led by Professor Qikun Xue in the department of physics at Tsinghua. The team consisted of several world-leading groups with expertise in material growth, characterization, and transport measurements led by Profs. Yayu Wang, Xucun Ma/Ke He and Li Lu. During the experimental exploration of QAHE, this joint team had been collaborating closely with Shoucheng’s theoretical group at IASTU. In this article, we will give a brief review about the QAHE, how it was discovered experimentally, and Professor CN Yang’s comments about the work.
