Abstract: Abstract This chapter addresses the chronological elements of the first migratory movements of the population up to the level of 2020, according to the latest data available worldwide, in the case of EU member states and former socialist states. The evolution of remittances over the period 1990–2020 is also presented. In addition to the evolution of migration, there was a ranking of countries depending on the indicators of the migration phenomenon (number of migrants, share of migrants in the total population of the country of origin, absolute value of remittances received and share of remittances in GDP). Rankings with top 10 countries are presented depending on the four indicators worldwide, EU member states and former socialist states.
