Chapter 4 in Value Creation for Owners and Directors, 2023, pp 93-107 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract CEOs and their executive teams are responsible for transforming the mission, defined by the owners, into reality. They select and then implement an appropriate course of action, ideally one that is best given the context facing the corporation. When CEOs and their executive teams pursue actions at variance with the mission, they inevitably generate a clash with the owners, and should be stopped by the board before much value destruction occurs as a result. One of the outcomes may be that execution reveals the mission to be impossible or too costly to deliver; in that case it is up to the board to engage the owners’ board in a discussion of a possible modification of the mission.
