Abstract:
Abstract This chapter provides end-to-end overview of the challenges associated with supply chain design and supply chain coordination with a concrete illustration from agri-business. With global population projected to reach 9 billion by 2050, agricultural supply chains must meet rising demand for food, feed, and fuel while protecting the planet’s natural resources. Matching supply with demand is particularly challenging in this setting due to long lead times, short selling seasons, and uncertain supply in addition to volatile demand. To guide the supply chain design process, the supply chain manager must first forecast potential customer demand. She must also assess the consequences of supply-demand mismatch. The challenge is then to configure a network of assets so that demand can be met in the most efficient fashion.
