Chapter Chapter 12 in Education and Economic Development, 2023, pp 247-296 from Springer Abstract: Abstract The causes of geographical differences have been analyzed in most theories of regional sciences, which have tried to provide answers to the question of why some regions are distinguished by faster development than others. The explanations are numerous and have been consistent with the reference period. Treiman and Yip (1989), in a comparative study conducted in 21 countries, found that education was a strong determinant of occupational status in many industrialized countries. In particular, in the last two decades, the analysis of regional disparities has become truly important, especially as there has been an increase in the number of empirical studies on convergence (Rey & Janikas, 2005). Analysts, theorists, and practitioners have also used the concept of disparity (discrepancy, inequality, imbalance) to express the differences identified using appropriate mathematical techniques and specific indicators. Education and labor sports are key factors that are changing very quickly and have a major impact on socioeconomic development.
