Chapter 2 in The People's Game?, 2023, pp 53-122 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract While the football market has enjoyed sustained revenue growth in the last few decades, this has not led to consistent improvement in the financial performance of all of its clubs. As a result, financial performance has become one of the dominant narratives about football, with regular commentary on financial success or failure at both league and club level. This chapter identifies a range of sources of financial information about clubs, both primary and secondary sources, and discusses their role in terms of both decision-making and providing accountability to stakeholders. The chapter also discusses the increased emphasis on football financial regulation and critiques its role in the game’s governance. More broadly, acknowledging that financial information only presents a partial narrative of the contribution, value and costs associated with professional football, the chapter considers other types of performance and value such as social and environmental, and discusses ways in which information on these areas is communicated and reported by and about clubs.
