Chapter Chapter 1 in The Cryptocurrency and Digital Asset Fraud Casebook, 2023, pp 1-16 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter provided an introduction to the subject of cryptocurrency and digital asset fraud and crime. It began by providing an introduction to fraud and included statistics on the current cryptocurrency and digital asset environment. Next, we discussed the common targets of fraud, and the different approaches used by criminals to defraud victims. We then proceeded to outline the legal elements of fraud, distinguishing criminal and civil fraud and discussed the various motivations for fraud through Cressey’s fraud triangle model. The chapter then proceeded to discuss the common types of cryptocurrency fraud topologies. As part of this discussion examples of fraud were discussed including wallet hacks, ransomware frauds, celebrity and corporate impersonation, social media hijacking, goodwill airdrop fraud, romance scams, pig butchering, and giveaway/multiplier scams.
