Abstract: Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic and the measures put in place to control its spread have significantly impacted the tourism sector. Despite significant progress towards recovery, African tourism destinations continue to bear the brunt of COVID-19 with weakened value chains and reduced activity following the pandemic’s immediate and immense shock on the sector and the spillover effects. This chapter provides an overview of the impacts of COVID-19 on tourism destinations in Africa and the prospects of recovery in the post-COVID-19 era drawing from the 14 chapters presented in this book. It discusses the major conclusions, recommendations and implications following the results presented in the chapters. In general, it is shown that COVID-19 has had severe effects on the tourism destinations on the African continent, with some having to close down due to low patronage, reduction in revenue, loss of raw materials and cancellation of bookings, among others. There are greater prospects for recovery of the sector in the post-COVID-19 era, but this is hinged on the implementation of recovery strategies such as timely planning, country-level collaborations, innovation and diversification, to mention a few. The need to build resilient tourist destinations in Africa is discussed. This can be done through digitalising systems, organising hybrid events, transitioning towards online tourism business, having contactless payment systems and turning to the domestic market.
