Prospects for Tourism Recovery in Kariba Town in the Context of COVID-19

Abstract: Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the accessibility of many tourism destinations across the globe, especially those that are regarded as hotspots. Recommendations about the revival of certain tourist destinations have been suggested in different quarters; Kariba resort town is no exception. Kariba town, located in North-West Zimbabwe, was classified as a COVID-19 hotspot. This chapter commences by examining how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted Kariba as a tourist destination at both domestic and international levels. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism business in Kariba slumped, and employment contracts were terminated for many workers. This chapter then further discusses the prospects for the revival of the tourism sector of Kariba town in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Stakeholders in the tourism sector interviewed during our research suggest different ways Kariba town tourism, image and reputation as a tourist destination can be revived. These stakeholders include hoteliers, boat and lodge owners, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority and workers in the tourism sector. This chapter draws from data gathered through face-to-face interviews with these stakeholders in Kariba town from June to August 2021.
