A chapter in Sustainable Education and Development – Sustainable Industrialization and Innovation, 2023, pp 166-176 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Purpose: This paper research on properties of clay deposits in selected places in Sekondi-Takoradi. This work aims to test the properties of the identified clay and its workability to produce wares with sustainable assessment outcomes. Design/Methodology/Approach: Physical, mechanical and chemical analyses of clay from three sites within the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly was performed. Using XRF and XRD (X-ray diffraction), physical, chemical and manufacturing modulus of rupture (MOR) were analysed. Findings: Findings revealed that the Sekondi and Fijai clay deposits are rough in texture compared to the clay sample from the Apemenyin deposit site, which is fine in texture. The MOR value analysed at a temperature of 1200 ℃ for the Sekondi sample showed to be more robust, durable and sustainable for wares production but contains a higher percentage of oxides of aluminium, calcium, iron and silicon as compared to those of aluminium, calcium, iron and other samples. Research Limitation/Implication: The research focused on the laboratory analysis of clay properties alone. Also, there is no scientific correlation between those properties among the clay deposit sites. Practical/Social Implications: The study intends to provide local manufacturers with the knowledge they need to innovatively utilize nearby, sustainable clay deposits to produce durable clay products in order to establish resilient and innovative clay-related enterprises. Originality/Value: This research will serve as an informative reference document for further research projects and industry players in STMA.
