Chapter Chapter 13 in Shipping and Logistics Management, 2023, pp 201-214 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Ports are places where there are facilities for berthing or anchoring ships and where there is cargo handling equipment to process cargoes from ships to shore, shore to ships, or ships to ships. There are different roles of ports, including: 1. ports as places; 2. ports as operating systems; 3. ports as economic units; and 4. ports as administrative units. The main facilities in container terminals include the quay, the container yard, the container freight station, the interchange area, the gate facility, and the railhead. The process in container terminals can be divided into subprocesses: arrival of the ship, cargo unloading and loading, transport of containers from ship to stack, stacking of containers, and interterminal transport and other modes of transport. As containers move along the container transport chain, they can have a different status, including empty container, full container load, and less than container load. Generally, the network of nodes and links involved in the container transport chain can be classified into four principal functions, i.e., consignment assembly, consignment consolidation, carriage, and port handling.
