Chapter Chapter 17 in The History and Future of Economics, 2023, pp 325-354 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Let’s start with the good news. As we all know (rightly or wrongly) the discovery of America put off the evil day predicted by Malthus, back in 1798, when population growth would lead to famine and starvation. Malthusianism became popular again in environmentalist circles in the 1960’s when Paul Ehrlich wrote a best-seller “The Population Bomb” (Ehrlich 1968). “Famine 1975! America’s Decision: Who Will Survive?” was a 1967 best-seller by William and Paul Paddock.
