Chapter 6 in Employee Relations and Trade Unions in Africa, 2023, pp 119-142 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Employment relations in South Africa are one of the worst in the world, primarily owing to the lack of trust between employees and their employers. While this unhealthy employment relationship has significant implications for the economy, organizational performance, and social relationships at work, trade unions have also remained apathetic to the prevailing conditions. Therefore, this chapter aims to present an understanding of employment relations and trade unions in South Africa. The chapter will explore existing studies on the employment relationship in South Africa to reveal the nature and complexities of the employee–employer relationship. Ultimately, we provide suggestions for the role of trade unions in enhancing employment relationships in South Africa.
