Abstract:
Abstract Polanyi’s conceptual framework offers the necessary elements to rethink organization studies. This author denounces indeed what he calls an economic fallacy, that is, the will to reduce the economy to the market economy. The domination of the market logic has many drawbacks. It tends to transform labor, money, and nature into commodities and masks other economic logics such as reciprocity, redistribution, and domestic sharing. The concept of substantive economy proposes to gather them and to take into account the man’s manifest dependence on nature and his fellow men to obtain his subsistence. Guerreiro Ramos pursues this perspective in the field of organization studies. Next to the instrumental rationality, he proposes to consider a substantive rationality founded on intersubjectivity and mutual understanding. He seeks to build a substantive political theory to qualitatively improve the social life of individuals in organizations, and to implement a multicentric society.
