Viruses and Leadership in a Historical Perspective
A. S. Bhalla
Chapter Chapter 1 in National and Global Responses to the COVID-19 Pandemic, 2023, pp 3-22 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract History and context matter if only to learn from past mistakes to shape a better future. Chapter 1 briefly examines previous viruses starting with the Russian flu and extending to the Great Influenza of 1918 to Ebola and COVID-19. Until the vaccines were developed in early 2021, a remarkable achievement of science and public-private partnerships, the public health guidelines (wearing of masks, physical and social isolation and frequent washing of hands) were no different from those non-pharmaceutical remedies recommended in 1918. It discusses how COVID-19 is different from previous endemics and pandemics. It also specifies which questions relating to the coronavirus still remain unanswered.
