Chapter Chapter 59 in Libertarian Autobiographies, 2023, pp 341-349 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explains the author’s intellectual development from conservative to libertarian. It also shows the evolution of his approach to changing public policy via a problem-solving approach rather than an ideological manner. This is illustrated via such policies as competitive contracting for state and local public service delivery, applying market pricing to highway traffic congestion, and privatizing revenue-generating infrastructure such as municipal utilities, airports, and toll roads via long-term public–private partnerships. It provides a capsule history of Reason Foundation, the think tank that the author co-founded and managed as its initial president and shows how its journalism division (Reason magazine) plays a complementary role to its public policy work.
