Abstract:
Abstract Despite coming from a distinctly non-libertarian family background, both faculty mentors in college and empirical work showing the power of competitive markets took me in a libertarian direction, assisted by the encouragement of libertarian titans like Murray Rothbard. My most important work, with Lowell Gallaway, Out of Work: Unemployment and Government in Twentieth Century America has been followed in recent years by critiques of American higher education (i.e., my 2019 Restoring the Promise: Higher Education in America.) I became something of a public intellectual, appearing frequently in national media (especially the Wall Street Journal) including network television, and even conferring with political leaders as diverse as Margaret Thatcher and Vladimir Putin.
