Interview with Economist Juan Triana

T. K. Hernández ()

Chapter Chapter 13 in The Cuba Interviews, 2023, pp 129-134 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Part II on the economy and foreign investment comprise two analyses of the Cuban economy: one from within and one from beyond the borders of Cuba. This chapter comprises an interview with Dr. Juan Triana Cordoví, the country’s leading economist. This conversation presents the perspective–of an economist who lives in Cuba. He is a senior professor at the Center for the Study of the Cuban Economy, University of Havana, an international lecturer, and author/co-author of numerous books on the subject. Dr. Triana’s interview took place as Georgia voters headed to the polls in the United States in early January 2021. In this conversation, Dr. Triana discusses the economy, and the devastating effects of the COVID pandemic on his homeland as the World Bank predicted a contraction in global GDP , exports, new reforms, and foreign investment. He also speaks of the impact of currency unification, recent reforms for investors, the expectations for trade and investment under the Biden presidency, and the strongest sectors that should drive success for the Cuban economy.
