Day Zero to the Future–Economist Dr. Emily Morris Discusses the Cuban Economy

Chapter Chapter 14 in The Cuba Interviews, 2023, pp 135-144 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Part II, the Economy and Foreign Investment, presents two analyses of the Cuban economy: one from within and one from beyond the borders of Cuba. This chapter contains the view from abroad in an interview with Dr. Emily Morris. Dr. Morris is a British economist, a research associate at the UCL Institute of the Americas, and formerly with the Economist Intelligence Unit. She is still engaged with Cuba in a sustainable development project on the Island. The first interview, “Day Zero to the Future,” occurred in the middle of the pandemic in January 2021. In this conversation, we discussed GDP and development, the complicated task of restructuring and transforming the new economy, the effects of reforms for foreign investors, and her predictions for the economy under two different scenarios. In June 2022, I conducted a second interview to obtain an update on her earlier predictions in light of the reopening of Cuba’s borders as international tourism began its recovery.
