Chapter Chapter 17 in The Cuba Interviews, 2023, pp 169-179 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Chapter 17 examines the banking and financial sector of Cuba. This interview is a conversation held with the Minister-President of the Central Bank of Cuba (BCC). Marta Sabina Wilson González, at the head office in Old Havana in June 2022. The Central Bank, acknowledging the need to modernize, is undergoing institutional transformation and structural changes in its efforts to achieve these goals. Transformation of the banking system is not without its challenges though. U.S. sanctions blocking technology access create difficulties in acquiring new technologies. The BCC has acquired banking technologies only much later than when they first appeared. Other challenges facing the bank are the continuous need for updating employee training and promoting a digital banking culture in the country. The BCC has made progress in payment process systems and in responding to the growth of the entrepreneurial sector and other actors of the economy. The interview also addresses foreign investment, cryptocurrencies, credit lending, services for the private sector, and legal reforms of the Bank.
