Chapter Chapter 25 in The Cuba Interviews, 2023, pp 269-272 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Chapter 25 of Part VII of this work is one of three interviews with oil company executives working in Cuba. These occurred between 2016 and 2021. Two of these conversations are with members of the board of directors of Melbana Energy Limited, an Australian oil exploration company. In 2012, Melbana executives began looking at opportunities on the island. A year later, the pre-qualification process began with Unión Cuba-Petróleo (CUPET), the national oil company, and another Australian company. After the pre-qualification, direct negotiations started. Since 2015, Melbana has been exploring Block 9 on the island’s north shore. By 2021, the company began drilling hydrocarbon systems with significant oil shows. This interview, “Is Energy Self-sufficiency in the Cards for Cuba?” is with Peter Stickland, former CEO of Melbana, now a director of the corporation. We discussed its partnership with CUPET and the prospect of finding an estimated eight billion barrels of Oil-in-Place. The interview was held in 2016.
