Chapter Chapter 37 in The Cuba Interviews, 2023, pp 363-369 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Part IX features interviews with investors in Cuba’s tourism sector. International border closures and increasing U.S. sanctions impacted the industry. This chapter comprises a conversation with Gerard Byrne, the Managing Director at Archipelago International, the largest privately owned hotel operator in Southeast Asia. We spoke in 2021. Mr. Byrne shares the company’s history of its investment in Cuba, from the first meeting with Cuban representatives in 2015 to its exploratory trip to the Island the following year. This interview examines hotel development and expansion during the pandemic. Also discussed was the significance of such an investment. Not only does it benefit people through job creation, training and increased earnings, but it also contributes to local economies by sourcing products and services from area businesses. Mr. Byrne also shared the implementation of its COVID-19 procedures during the pandemic. Today, Archipelago operates five hotels and resorts across the Island.
