Environmental Defense Fund and Cuba’s Long-Term Mutually Beneficial Relationship, Dan Whittle

Élise C. Hartill ()

Chapter Chapter 41 in The Cuba Interviews, 2023, pp 403-415 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Part XII, Chapter 41 looks at the roles of NGOs and non-profits in economic development. The final interview of this book is a conversation with Environmental Defense Fund’s senior advisor and attorney, Dan Whittle. Ocean scientist Élise C. Hartill interviewed Mr. Whittle in June 2020, following the 20th anniversary of collaboration with Cuba. This collaboration began while EDF worked with U.S. federal advisory councils to create rules to end overfishing and protect fish habitats. The Cubans invited the EDF to present a series of papers at an international marine conference in Havana in December 2000. Cuban scientists were eager to work with EDF on the environment and science. Since that initial meeting, the EDF has hosted workshops in Cuba to bring scientists and policymakers together. It has been a fruitful collaboration. The interview demonstrates how non-governmental organizations can benefit through dialogue, cooperation, and knowledge sharing with common goals. Ultimately, these types of relationships between nations bring positive outcomes to global concerns.
