Chapter Chapter 6 in Contemporary Perspectives in Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior, 2023, pp 99-120 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In this chapter, another pressing challenge facing employees globally is explored, that is, workplace harassment and its multiple research facets. Workplace harassment refers to interpersonal behavior intending to harm another employee in the workplace. It can take the form of verbal abuse, violence/physical aggression, workplace bullying, or sexual harassment, and has unequivocally detrimental effects on physical health, mental health, and work performance. Workplace harassment affects all groups of employees to varying degrees (for instance, men, women, LBGTQ + ). The developments in research in such areas are assessed. The outcomes of harassment and its impact on withdrawal from work, work attitudes, intentions, behaviors, and work quality are investigated, and the antecedents are also evaluated in research. Further, promoting equity and belongingness in the workplace is assessed and the implications of the #MeToo movement on workplace harassment. The literature is explored in these areas and research gaps are also identified.
