A chapter in Behavioral Public Policy in a Global Context, 2023, pp 165-177 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter is about lessons learned from applying behavioral insights to public policy challenges in the Arab region, with more focus on the journey of the launch of B4Development, the nudge unit at the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, which oversees the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 event. It sheds light on key learnings from setting up nudge units in the Arab region, conducting in the early days smaller-scale experiments, and engaging stakeholders. Following an incubation period, the chapter describes the gradual shift to tackling more complex challenges, such as the prevention of violent extremism and inclusion, as well as the integration of behavioral science angles in FIFA World Cup tournament. Several lessons were learned along the way and these could be very useful for newcomers to this field. Key among these are the importance of leadership and other stakeholders buy-in especially in the early days, capacity building in behavioral science for partners, engagement in programs at inception, and adequate management of expectations.
