A chapter in Behavioral Public Policy in a Global Context, 2023, pp 295-314 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Bringing lessons from behavioral science to support the goals of eliminating poverty and increasing shared prosperity around the world is the task of the Mind, Behavior and Development Unit (eMBeD). The chapter summarizes lessons from the process of setting up a behavioral science unit in a large institution like the World Bank and how to adopt and adapt behavioral science to work with governments, organizations, and partners to improve poverty-reduction development policies at scale. From a start that capitalized on quick gains to build momentum and buy-in to more complex and wide-reaching anti-poverty interventions, the process has been one of constant trade-offs. From how to staff, fund, and operate a successful unit, the chapter describes how eMBeD successfully increased demand for its support by offering its clients a results-driven and pragmatic set of research products, from intervention design to implementation and evaluation, and capacity-building. Moreover, the chapter shows how eMBeD tests iteratively, learns, and adapts its procedures and structure to evolve alongside its changing context to adapt to new challenges.
