Chapter Chapter 11 in Accounting for Colonialism, 2023, pp 213-233 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter seeks to quantify colonial extraction through trade in French Africa, by comparing prices to African producers paid by monopsonistic colonial trading companies with those that would have been paid in a competitive market. The results demonstrate that African prices were considerably below competitive levels, suggesting an annual loss of almost 2% of GDP during the colonial era.
