Chapter Chapter 2 in Accounting for Colonialism, 2023, pp 9-45 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract What is the long-term cost to Africa of the European slave trade in development terms, and the long-run positive contribution to the structural transformation of European and North American economies? The European slave trade had a serious adverse effect on socioeconomic development in sub-Saharan Africa between 1500 and 1870. And it facilitated development in Europe and North America. This competitive disadvantage led to European colonial domination in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which further increased the competitive disadvantage.
