Chapter 4 in Digitalization, Technology and Global Business, 2023, pp 53-70 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The chapter analyses the impact of digital platforms in the international expansion of businesses and discusses how they are shaping international business decisions, as well as the international strategy of companies. It also focuses on the key role they are having in the international expansion of small and medium enterprises. The discussion shows that platforms are having a positive impact on companies in the following areas: (i) they help companies to minimize the transaction costs of operating internationally; and not only that, they do this without the need for firms to internalize these transaction costs, (ii) they are changing consumption patterns and therefore opening new markets and demand both domestically and internationally, and (iii) they have been vital in reducing the liability of foreignness as they provide almost direct access to the final consumer regardless of where the producer is located. Challenges and future directions are also discussed, and examples are provided to illustrate the discussion.
