Abstract:
Abstract What is optimization? From the mathematical point of view, it consists of finding the extrema of a numerical function. Starting from this observation, an optimization problem can be very abstract and purely mathematical, or model a real problem of everyday life, going through all the degrees of complexity in the most varied scientific fields. In this chapter, we recall some theoretical results concerning unconstrained optimization and we illustrate them on the problem of identifying parameters by adjustment to the data, for a simple epidemic model.
