Abstract:
Abstract Chapter 10, “Hyundai-Kia in the NAFTA Region, 1997–2019,” chronicles the re-established and expanding production footprint of Hyundai-Kia in North America since 1997. Its first section provides the reader with some background related to the two automakers’ experiences in the American and Canadian markets prior to 1997. It then examines the competition for, and major events involving, the automotive group’s three post-2000 vehicle assembly complexes in the region. This begins with the story of the HMMA Montgomery Plant. This is followed by sections discussing the Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) West Point Plant, and the Kia Motors Manufacturing Mexico (KMMX) Plant near Monterrey in Pesqueria, Nuevo Leon. The chapter concludes with some highlights from the three factories’ experiences between 2017 and 2019. The final section also summarizes the group’s explosive growth in North America since 1997, and its prospects for the future in the region.
