Abstract:
Abstract Analysis provided in earlier chapters reveals critical elements of the new strategic management paradigm. It is, however, predominantly conceptual. How will this conceptual framework translate into applications within the emerging technology-laced business environment of today and tomorrow? Application that will require specific operational tools extending over a wide front. The following chapter will try to provide an answer to this question. Operational modes of intervention are suggested. The first is top management–related and the second is organization-wide-related. Those are competency generation programs responding to the competency needs and gaps identified throughout the entire book and organized according to earlier analysis and identified relevant issues. Each competency generation issue ends with a set of operational competency intervention programs. A sample operational competency intervention program features at the end of this chapter. It is based on an ad hoc area selected from the lists featuring in the analysis. The selection of operational competency intervention programs is judgmental and actual treatment of issues may deliver a wider listing. Competency generation programs are nontraditional in terms of structure, focus, coverage, approach, and ultimate goals and fulfillment monitors. They may require considerable effort to design and conduct. The illustration is provided for a program dealing with the management of business and industry shifts. The program is provided in an annex. This “model” program provides a structure as well a number of industry illustrations including emerging and declining industries. The Metaverse, one of the quoted cases, is supposed to represent an emerging industry (or product) and fossil fuel engines are taken as a case in industry decline.
