Abstract:
Abstract Libertarians fear government authoritarianism. The best protection of individual freedom is to minimize the size of government control. That does not mean a night watchman state where the government only controls the legal system, judicial system, and military. I highlight the thinking of major libertarian thinkers who recognize that government has more roles to play but suggest methods for limiting use of arbitrary power by government. The major libertarians discussed are Frederick Hayek and Milton Friedman. Other notables are cited but more briefly. To see how libertarian thought has influenced American politics, the chapter ties Republican Presidential Platforms to libertarian thought.
