Chapter 8 in Humanizing the Digital Economy, 2023, pp 179-205 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Large platforms are replacing traditional marketplaces. Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Google, and Facebook are the object of extensive research and antitrust policy proceedings. Three basic questions frame the investigation in this chapter: (1) Why have they maintained for decades such a large presence in the online economy? (2) Are they shaping markets in ways that exploit customers and competitors? (3) Are they shaping politics to fit their own needs? This chapter gives an overview of how the online economy works and highlights the failures of government policy caused by a lack of understanding of its underlying technology.
