Chapter 1 in Small Business and Entrepreneurial Development in Africa, 2023, pp 3-16 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract An improved standard of living and the wellbeing of a population are highly dependent on economic growth and stability. Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa for that matter have embarked on several structures and policies to advance economic growth with the aim of achieving improved economic growth, that translates into improved standards of living of the African population. Entrepreneurship has been one of such strategies and has so far proven, by all standards, to be the pivot for sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction in Africa. Entrepreneurial activities create avenues for innovative coordination of scarce resources, which in turn creates income-generating activities, economic growth, and improved standards of living. The urgent need for sustainable economic growth and an improved standard of living for the African population require an understanding and appreciation of the components of entrepreneurship, and how each component impacts on the African economy. The chapter discusses the the specific role entrepreneurship plays in the African economy by discussing the various dimensions of entrepreneurship as a tool for economic growth in Africa, and further introduces the various chapters of the book
