Chapter 6 in Small Business and Entrepreneurial Development in Africa, 2023, pp 125-145 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This study explores reasons domestic firms decide to enter into joint venture with foreign firms and the forms of resources domestic firms obtain from their foreign partners. In order to address these objectives, we conducted in-depth interviews with nine managers/CEOs of firms in Ghana that are currently in joint venture with foreign firms. We used a thematic analysis technique to analyse the data. Our results show that the social capital theory explains joint venture relationship. Firms in joint venture access resources via social relations and social structures. The results also show that although the home firms enter into joint venture with foreign firms in order to access financial resources and for foreign firms to reaffirm their credibility, home firms are able to access knowledge and new market once they enter into joint venture.
