Abstract:
Abstract Understanding the impact that an online work environment poses for the inclusion of migrants and other international workers has become a highly relevant issue due to increasing labor shortage in the global business environment. In this regard, international inclusiveness scholarship has focused on the role of cultural and linguistic differences for organizational integration of foreign nationality minorities but has rarely considered the extent to which this is taking place through computer-mediated interaction. Simultaneously, virtual work research has delved on the social disengagement that is prominent in online work but without explicit attention to its effect on inclusive organizational practices. We, therefore, integrate inclusiveness and virtual work theories to conceptualize how migrants’ integration into the MNC as a global workplace is affected by the online environment. These insights lead to theoretical and practical advances in the conversation about cultural and linguistic differences in international business research suggesting that the online environment can have both positive and negative consequences for organizational inclusion of migrants.
