Chapter Chapter 2 in 110 Years of Taxation from Pitt to Lloyd George, 2023, pp 9-27 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter provides a brief historiography to explain the fiscal developments of the period. Primary sources referencing Hansard debates in parliament (Buxton, Mallett), as well as key secondary sources providing a historical context (Daunton, Trentmann) are included. It provides fiscal context to the proliferation of cartoons covering the Cobden–Chevalier treaty of 1860, Alabama claims dispute between Britain and the US (1861–1872), Harcourt’s 1894 budget, and finally, Lloyd George’s Peoples Budget of 1909. More detailed fiscal commentary is provided in the individual chapters analysing the specific fiscal events.
