Chapter Chapter 3 in 110 Years of Taxation from Pitt to Lloyd George, 2023, pp 29-47 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The emphasis is on the use of cartoons as primary sources of historical evidence. The book traces the emergence of genteel Victorian and Edwardian humour after the frenzied period of Georgian excesses. The chapter introduces my PEARL template—this identifies key elements of hermeneutic interpretation of images—Publisher political bias, Editorial input, Artistic style, Readers’ reaction, Legal context (existence or absence of censorship). The chapter then analyses Gombrich’s ‘cartoonists’ armoury’ and the various stylistic devices used to convey fiscal messages. The iconography of the period references the importance of John Bull, overlaid by the cartoonists’ use of icons associated with Victorian pastimes/interests: The book illustrates the influence of repetitive cartoons made possible by publishers’ demands for repeat print runs and the use of recurring icons by the periodicals’ cartoonist. The comparison with US images identifies the innovative use of colour in Puck.
